Garden Elements

Posted: Oct 29, 2009 | Category: Garden Decor

The four key elements of nature for our survival are earth, fire, water and wind and more artistic gardeners use these elements subtly in their gardens for achieving the right balance of their effects.

Earth elements are all too often mistaken for simple soil when soil forms only a part of the earth element in a garden. Prominent earth representation in a garden is achieved by the right combination of rocks, clay, stones and terracotta.

Ponds and water features are becoming increasingly popular. They need power supply and their best position is where they are both visible and audible. Water features come in a variety of different forms including rocks, pots and walls, so use them the way you want.

Wood features and trees The element of wood always represents the feeling of warmth. You can add wood to your garden in a number of different ways like wooden decking around the water feature and fences for privacy.

Garden plants Like trees, even plants act as inspiration for much of your garden features. Individual garden features like floral sundials and an intricate arrangement of blooming hedges can be done using plants.

Decorative concrete The appeal of a concrete area can be greatly enhanced by applying a stain, stencil or stamped pattern on the surface. The extensive range of colors, patterns and styles is suitable for any type of garden. They also look great when used on paths, driveways, stairs and patios, as well as near every concrete surface.

Outdoor elements They can lend an air of individuality and attitude to a garden. On the basis of the desired effect, you can use birdbaths, pots, sundials, pagodas, lanterns and stones to further complement your garden. Everything is permitted in the absence of formal rules, but limiting them is generally advisable.

Use furniture in which you can sink into the environment created by you. Ornaments should evoke delight, like garden swings. You could also make provision in your garden for bonfires on chilly autumn evenings.

Garden Shed – Usefulness and How to Construct

Posted: Oct 22, 2009 | Category: Garden Decor

A garden shed is a structure that is usually made of wood and located at the back of a garden. It is used as a storage area and also as a place to relax and engage in gardening and such hobbies. They are not only the store house of tools, but also of all the temporary unwanted items of the house that might prove useful one day.

If you are bored of the useless items stored in your garden shed, it’s time to make it a bit more interesting and lively. You can modify the garden shed using shed plans and shed kits. The garden shed are not all created equal. The design of the garden shed is essential and depends on whether you are building it from scratch with a good set of shed plans, hammering an existing shed kit, or bolting a steel building together. To build a garden shed that has a greater storing capability, you need to design the garden shed with generous roof lines.

While selecting the design, make sure that it has proper headroom. It is uncomfortable smacking your head against the rafters. Neither is it easy to stoop and work every time you are inside the garden shed. Another concern is the storage space, since the main use of a garden shed is to store. Thus, while selecting a garden shed, opt for the tall salt box, gambrel shed, and barn design.

If you love adventure and trying out things on your own, then making your own garden shed will be an exciting activity for you. It is the ideal way to spend your weekend since this exciting activity takes a couple of days. Before you start off with this task, gather a few tools around you. Hammers, level, reciprocating saw, tape measure, safety glasses, gloves and stepladder are required. For the basic material you need to have pre-fabricated storage shed kit with loads of nails.

To begin with the task, pour a concrete floor in a flat and dry location the offers good drainage. Nail the framework of the floor together. Make sure that the floor is square in shape and nail the floor joists to a skid. The floor joists should be pressure treated to resist rot when you are placing the shed directly on the concrete floor. Install plywood flooring on the framework with the help of nails. Leave a small space between the boards while flooring, to keep the floor panels from bucking. To maintain the strength of the floor align the grain of the floorboards with the joists.

Assemble and nail the frames of the walls. Raise a wall and align the edges with the sub-floor. Make the wall section overlap the plywood floor to protect the edges of the plywood. Repeat the same process for walling the other three sides and nail them. After attaching the front wall frame, cut away the plate at the bottom of the doorframe. Once all the four walls are up, make sure that they are all square. Assemble the two roof sections and lift it carefully onto the roof, so as not to break the ridge assembly. Align and nail then together at the roof peak and use additional studs on the end of the wall.

Nail a siding on the front after checking the stud location. Attach the rear walls in a similar way. Attach fascia boards on the vertical ends of the rafters. Nail soffit blocks at the bottom of the rafter and attach peak fascia flush at the top of it. OSB boards are used for the roof. Cover the roof with the building paper from the eaves to the ridge at the peak of the roof. Nail it properly, overlapping the strips as you go. Lay the singles upside down along the eaves overlapping the roof at the edges. Similarly, cover the roof peak with shingles lapped across the peak and nailed on both sides. Install a window frame on the wall by cutting that area of the wall. Similarly, for the door, fasten the hinge boards and nail it down.

You can easily try to construct a garden shed by yourself by experimenting various other ways. The very name suggests that they are special types of buildings that are constructed in the gardens with the purpose of storing different gardening tools like gardening hoes, trimming scissors, seeds, fertilizers, and also for carrying out various gardening work.

Garden sheds can be of two types. There are various garden sheds that have apex-roofs. Other traditional pointed roofs have the doors located at one of the ends. These pent-roof garden sheds usually have a sloping roof that moves toward the sides of the roof. The doors of the pent-roof garden sheds are present at one of the side walls. The garden sheds are also used to dispel the decomposed parts of the plants through grafting the plants. A beautiful garden shed can also help to enhance the beauty of the garden along with performing the usual function it is meant to do.

Garden Flag

Posted: Oct 15, 2009 | Category: Garden Decor

Gone are the days when one had to wait for Flag Day or a National event to hoist a flag. Today the concepts of garden flags have made it possible for people to hoist flags whenever they wish. Garden flags not only give the scope for hoisting flags according to one’s wishes but also contribute enormously towards the adornment of ones garden. A garden looks beautiful with all their greenery and blossom and garden flags serve like icing on the cake.

Garden flags can be used on all possible events like mother’s day, father’s day, Mardi Gras, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, Christmas, Valentine’s day, or even as you usher in the seasons of spring, summer or winter. In fact an event is not always required to use a garden flag. It can be used on any day to reflect one’s mood and spirit. If this sounds incredible the wide variety of flags available goes a long way in proving the point.

Garden flags are not just limited to national flags or flags with patriotic patterns and designs. The wide range of variety in design includes college flags, flags with sceneries, pictures of animals, birds and flowers, cute cartoons, religious depictions or almost anything under the sun. Garden flags are also made in support of a noble cause like anti-aids campaign or a campaign to support breast cancer research. The colors range from somber to vibrant or from a single colored flag to a multi-colored one.

The garden flags are also available with beautiful and ornate embellishments like handcrafted appliqués, beads, spinners, flowers, and balloons and also with 3-D effects. In spite of such a wide range of options there might be people who are not satisfied with this range of designs. There is nothing to worry in this case as well. Using a little bit of creativity and innovation one can easily make garden flags at home. These flags can be made best suited to ones desire.

The fabric used for garden flags is generally nylon or polyester, which is quite durable. Polyester flags allow the wind to pass through the fabric. This makes these flags a better bargain in case of rough breeze and strong sunlight. Cheaper polyester garden flags are extremely light thereby making them durable for a very short time. Most garden flags are made fade resistant as well as mildew resistant. These flags are available in cotton as well. However, bright colors in cotton tend to fade easily. They can be machine-washed and are so long lasting that they can be used season after season. The designs are generally made on both sides of the garden flags while the letters are imprinted on just one side.

Garden flags come in various sizes. Large sized garden flags as well as smaller and miniature garden flags can be purchased with equal ease. However, when it comes to shapes, the rectangular and square shapes are generally adhered to. Depending on the size, the pattern or design, the texture and the rarity of the garden flags the prices keep differing. Hence, one can make their choices and buy these garden flags to suit their personal budget.

Various flag accessories are also available with garden flags. White fiberglass or metal poles, aluminum brackets for flag poles, wall hangers made of wrought iron, scroll top brackets, holders for the wall, mini hangers for the window, brackets for the mail box, garden stands and flag mandrel and organizers are some garden flag accessories.

Garden flags, as already mentioned, are used to decorate ones garden irrespective of any event or occasion. However, the flags are definitely changed with various specific events. There is yet another use of garden flags. They can be used as wonderful gift items too. Hence, one can beautify his/ her own garden with a garden flag as well as help a friend or a dear one to decorate his/ hers too.

How can home be a source of stress as well? Look around you. Do you love what you see? Are your furnishings and home style the way you want them to be? If not, then there is what you call your home stress.

People should always come home to a home they have always wanted to be in – clean, simple yet beautiful, homey atmosphere, and the perfect style and décor to accentuate the whole place. So what makes a home perfect? It all has to do with décor and style. No need for expensive furniture in front of you because it can still be perfect without being too pricey.
Country décor is the perfect décor and style for your home if you are working on a slim budget. Most of the materials or fixtures needed to enhance your home are things that already exist in your home but were dusted in time; things that are natural in our surroundings; and things that can be made out of those natural resources.

Some of the materials considered for a country décor are the following:

  • Arts & Crafts in Wood. These can be primitive baskets, dried flowers on old wood vases, big old jars, and more. Amish crafts are perfect because they have primitive and rustic country décor.
  • Candles. If you think designing your contemporary home with candles is how you only do it, think again. Actually, candles really belong to country décor.
  • Quilts for bedroom. Just by the mere appearance of it, it already creates a feeling of hominess in countryside.
  • Wall paints. The neutral colors on the paints of your walls are perfect for country décor. Take off-white or cream colors and paint your walls. Pastels are also second best choices.
  • Old curtains. Do you remember your Granny’s old curtains that are lacy? They are what you call country home décor. Find something like that, or ask some shops to create one for you from their own line of fabrics.
  • Any material that is natural but looks country to you will also do good for your country décor.
  • When using these materials or resources, consider also the space and clutter in your house prior to your planned home improvement. Check out the spaces and plan ahead where you think this or that particular furnishing fits. Imagine the colors behind the wall, too. And smell the old country house where you use to play when you were kids. These memories may sometimes lead you to the perfect country style.

Planning and changing your current home to a new home style should always be pleasurable and affordable, if possible. So that whenever you feel like changing it again after sometime, you can always do so without regretting about the money spent for the past home décor.

Small Bathroom Decor Tips

Posted: Sep 17, 2009 | Category: Bathroom Decor

Small Bathroom DecorDo you live in an apartment or condo unit that has a tiny bathroom? Do you have a hard time decorating your bathroom because of its small space? Maybe you already have an idea but you think it won’t work in such a small bathroom. Here are some bathroom décor tips that will surely turn your small bathroom into a cozy and warm retreat and make it appear larger.

  • Choose relaxing color scheme. Soft, pale, and muted colors make any room appear larger. Try not to use bold and bright colors such as red or navy blue. Choose paler hues such as light blue or green because pale colors can make a room look bigger. It doesn’t always have to be pink when you hear the adjectives soft and pale. Big backgrounds like the tiles and walls should be in pastel colors and accessories such as shower curtain, a wall design, or towels should be in bright colors for added accent.
  • Add light fixtures that will make your bathroom brighter and appear more spacious. Aside for the lighting on your ceiling, you can mount sconces on your bathroom wall to add a romantic glow in your bathroom. If you have the cash, you can also place large windows to let in natural light.
  • Use mirrors to make your bathroom seem larger. Mirrors can reflect the lights and pattern of the bathroom’s tiles that make it look like an extension of the room. You can choose one large mirror in front of your sink or several small mirrors carefully arranged in an artistic manner.
  • Don’t use small accessories in a small bathroom. It will make your room look cluttered. On the floor, choose one big rug and on the wall, just place one piece of large art.
    • Have a storage space for all the knick-knacks that you might need when taking a bath. Place them inside your vanity or a linen closet. Clutter gives that feeling of having no room and will not make you feel relaxed. Messy rooms always make a room smaller than clean and neat ones.
  • Hang a painting that depicts an outdoor view such as mountains or a garden. The painting will create an illusion of a window, which will add more imaginary space to your bathroom. You can also paint a mural if you know how to do it.
  • Don’t use decorative pieces or shelves that stick out. This could make the space appear smaller than it is because it cuts your vision up to that portion that sticks out. Aside from this, it might also be dangerous because you might bump or hit the sticking part while you are making your way inside your bathroom.
  • Use a clear glass for your shower or bathroom door instead of the frosted one. Better yet, don’t use any doors at all so that your eyes can go what was behind that door. You can sue shower curtain instead so that it will be easier to push it to one side when you are not using the bath or shower.

Garden Planning And Design

Posted: Sep 10, 2009 | Category: Garden Decor

Being the owner of a beautiful garden is desirable for all nature lovers. But others too harbor the wish to beautify their lawns by planting. Gardens have been admired for years but what makes a garden truly inviting is proper planning and designing.

Planning out your garden with due consideration will boost your confidence in taking on your project tremendously. Consider whether you want straight lines or curves, a casual arrangement or a formal design. Your house can be used as the starting point for your garden plans. For instance, symmetrical, formal landscape designs go better with traditional homes and for a house in country-style, gingerbread trim would give a romantic and lush appearance amidst a riot of colorful flowers.

A crucial consideration for garden planning is the amount of sun your garden gets. Almost all flowering plants crave for sunshine requiring a minimum of six hours of direct sunlight each day. But do take those plants under consideration that bloom well in shade. For a yard that receives less than a couple of hours of direct sunlight in a day or mostly basks in dappled shade, plants known to thrive in complete or partial shade, like Siberian Iris, Cranesbill (tough perennial geraniums), host as and coral bells, can be considered.

The whole design process of the garden needs to be functional. The design of the garden needs to be the way you want it. Avoid racks of a single plant species merely on account of it being your favorite. It may ruin the overall garden design. Compile a list of plants of your choice, and group them according to color, texture and form, to make your garden amazing. Charting can also be done according to flowering season and interest.

Garden designing involves coloring walls and pavements brightly rather than bringing them down. It is more advisable to grow a garden along the pavement instead of making a pavement through the garden. So long you ensure everything is alive, a garden will look appealing.
